JD Tile recently completed a master bathroom renovation in Lancaster, PA. The scope of work involved: demo the existing shower and tub deck of the existing 4″ tile. Prep the new shower with mud walls and pan, waterproof, tile with large format tiles and a mosaic feature band. New shower includes a recessed niche placed perfectly in the space of a tile. The deck of the tub will serve as a shaving ledge as new glass will be installed and set back 5″. This feature will increase the area of the shower and avoid the need for a separate shelf. The tile bullnose pieces were used on the curb and to frame the shower and deck and deck backsplash. The floor in the bathroom was also tiled with the 12X24s. Continuity flows throughout the master bathroom, glass and color will added to the room to complete it! Plasma grout by Laticrete used along with Mapei’s Aqua Defense for waterproofing the mud walls and shower pan. Normally in this day and age cement board is used but JD Tile has trained extensively with other professionals in PA and CA to learn the art of mud work. Mud walls allow the tile mechanic the ability to take an out of square and area not plumb and make it perfect to tile onto. Mud walls is a lost art that has been around hundreds of years, but has given way to new innovations. It still remains the best possible way to prepare a shower for tile. JD Tile is always looking to learn new techniques and products in order to have a selection to choose from for the potential job.
Customer remembered JD Tile from previous work 10 years ago. He tiled a stove base and entryway previously for customer. The current job was to remove the vinyl sheeting and install tile by Crossville, Americana series from Garden State Tile in Lancaster. The dark series went on the floor and lighter color for the backsplash. These tiles are V4 or varied to 4 shades. Varied shading is very popular these days. The new tile was installed to the height of the adjoining hardwood floor in the breakfast area. The proper substrate had to be installed to achieve this. Schluter Ditra was the choice in this situation. The dishwasher and stove were unhooked and removed from the room in order to tile the flooring underneath. After the floor was finished appliance were installed. Epoxy SpectraLock grout was used on the floor for longevity.

The client came to JD Tile after a major renovation in her home. She did not feel confident with the GC doing the tile shower. She also wanted someone closer and someone who was just a tile contractor. Customer already had the tile and working closely with JD Tile we worked out the details. 12X36″ tiles were installed on the walls up the the 10′ ceiling. Schluter Bright White aluminum profiles were used to finish all edges to include the window and niche. The niche was custom framed for the customer and extra shelve was made in case customer wants a second shelf. The curb top and sil were white corian. The a kerdi drain was used and glass pebbles used in the pan. The large format tiles were a concern for the customer as the specs were calling for a 1/16″ inch grout line, lippage was also a concern. JD Tile used the MLT, Mechanical Lippage Tuning system to achieve a 99% lippage free installation. The walls previously installed by the GC were not plumb so experienced was used to correct this with his many years of experience. Bright White Epoxy grout was used in the shower. The many years of experience paid off for another successful installation with the new format tiles of today. The challenge of this installation shows why a homeowner should have an experienced tile contractor who has kept up with the new materials that keep coming out by the manufacturers. The customer was very satisfied and glad she found the right tile contractor. She already wants him to work on her home in Michigan because she knows he will work with her to get the desired results.
